Exhibition: "Keeping the King's Peace"

 A new exhibition by the Museum of Policing in Devon and Cornwall entitled "Keeping the King’s Peace."

A look at significant moments in keeping protests peaceful. From quelling fish riots to policing the A30 protest and other events in between.

The exhibition will run from Tuesday 27th January until Saturday 28th March.

Join Simon Dell for an illustrated talk entitled 'Tyrwhitt’s Tramway"

Doors open at 6:45pm and the talk starts at 7pm in the Courtroom.

It is free to attend, although donations to the Guildhall Heritage Centre are always welcome.

Half-Term Drop-in Activity:

 Tavistock Heritage Trust's Discovery Team will be holding a family drop-in activity session in the Guildhall Courtroom from 10am -1pm on Wednesday 18th February entitled ‘Become a Detective’.

• Code breaking
• Fingerprints
• Mystery Trail
• Clue solving and more!

The session is suitable for Primary aged children, and children 11 years and under must be supervised by an adult. The activities are free, but donations of £1 per child to cover materials are welcomed.

Activities will take place at the back of the Guildhall Courtroom, general access is through the main Courtroom door.

Courtroom Talk: ‘The Fair Arm of the Law’

 Join Simon Dell at 7 pm for his presentation ‘The Fair Arm of the Law" on Friday 27th March at Tavistock Guildhall in the former Courtroom.

In this talk, Simon will look at the founding of the Policewomen’s Department in 1915 which had its origins in the social changes of the early 20th century, the Suffragette movement and the Great War. The talk will also celebrate the women who changed the history of the police service in the West Country.

The talk will last about an hour and is free, but donations to the work of the Guildhall are welcomed.

Courtroom Talk - 'The Georgian Improvers on Dartmoor'

Join Simon Dell for an illustrated talk entitled "The Georgian Improvers on Dartmoor"

In this talk Simon tells the story of ambitious attempts 200 years ago to turn the moorlands of Dartmoor into productive agricultural land. The so-called ‘improvers’ had limited success, but their efforts made an impact on the landscape that can still be seen today.

Talk starts at 7pm in the Courtroom. It is free to attend, although donations to the Guildhall Heritage Centre are always welcome.
